Gertrude as an Innocent Victim or a Sexually and Morally Corrupt Woman in Hamlet Shakespeare’s character Gertrude is one of much mystery; in relation to this there are many questions that need to be answered to establish Gertrude’s innocence through out the play. Some examples of these questions are, was Gertrude in some kind of relationship with Claudius before the murder of her late Husband and did she know about the murder before or after it was committed? Does she love Claudius or is it just her status that she is protecting? And did she ever love the late King Hamlet? At the beginning of the play when we learn about the late King Hamlet’s death and Gertrude’s hasty marriage to his brother Claudius, we are faced with a question on the audience’s awareness. It can be assumed that the marriage to her brother- in-law is purely because of Gertrude’s weak personality, resulting in a dependency on men and the means of protecting her status and her power. We also question the love between the Gertrude and Claudius; this is because there is no suggestion of a resemblance between the late King and his brother. The description that we are given about late King Hamlet maybe slightly distorted, as it is Hamlet who tells us this, and he is noticeably loyal to his father. It is also possible to argue that the love that the late King and Gertrude shared was not that strong as the only evidence to suggest this has been told to us by Hamlet and he maybe slightly bias. First we notice that Gertrude does not display her grief for her dead husband, and suspicions mount when she also tells Hamlet that he should stop his mourning as well.... ...unishment upon death. She does not show any untoward hatred towards Claudius showing that she may not be aware of his cruel deed. In the end Gertrude drinks the poison which can suggest many things; that she has no knowledge of the poison or that she feels guilty of her late husband’s death, and cannot carry on with the corrupt behaviour between her husband and her son, or that she is protecting her son and saving his life. When she attempts to consume the drink she is stopped suddenly by Claudius, but she replies â€Å"I will my lord, I pray you pardon me†, is this the request of someone who is guilty, someone who is tired of the fighting between her two dearest or of someone with no awareness of what was going to happen? This for many readers is the critical part of the play in determining her innocence or guilt.

Alexander Murray Palmer Haley

Alex Haley was born on August 11, 1921 in Ithaca, New York. He was the oldest son of Simon Alexander Haley and Bertha Palmer Haley. His father was a World War I veteran, and his mother was a teacher. Until he was five years old, he lived in Henning, Tennessee with his grandmother because his father had to finish his studies. Alex was always extremely proud of his father as a young man. Alex Haley graduated from high school at the age of 15 and enrolled at Alcorn A&M College (Alcorn State University) in Mississippi.He focused hard on education, just like his father. In 1939 he quit school, though, to become part of the Coast Guard. He retired from the Coast Guard in 1959, and decided to make writing part of his life. He became a freelance writer. He wrote many articles over the years and got them published, but he got very little pay. Haley can still remember working 16-hours a day for roughly $2,000 a year, surviving on not much but canned sardines. Alex Haley was the author of the R oots phenomenon.He had learned tales of his African ancestor, Kunta Kinte, as a child. Alex was told he was Kunta Kinte’s seventh generation descendant, and after ten years of research he discovered the truth. He went to the village of Juffure, where Kunta Kinte grew up, and listened to the true tales of a tribal historian. Alex said that the most emotional moment of his life was standing at the site in Annapolis, Maryland, where his ancestor stood in chains from Africa more than 200 years ago. Alex Haley also wrote The Autobiography of Malcolm X book.His big breakthrough was in 1962 when he was asked to do an interview with the trumpeter Miles Davis in the Playboy magazine. The interview was so successful that Haley was given a contract to conduct interviews with several other African Americans. Haley interviewed Martin Luther King Jr. , Sammy Davis Jr. , Quincy Jones, and Malcolm X. After an interview with Malcolm X, Alex asked if he could write a book on Malcolm’s l ife. Two years later, The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told To Alex Haley book was published.Not only did Alex Haley write these beautiful pieces of art he showed people of color that they too should be proud of their heritage and avoid easily falling victim to the viciousness of racism. Through his writing, Alex Haley was capable of making African Americans feel strong and triumphant. He attempted to depict African Amercians for what they truly opposed to what many racists may perceive them to be. This is in my opinion, is what Alex Haley has contributed to society. If I could meet Alex Haley, I would tell him how much I admire him and his ancestor, Kunta Kinte.I watched Roots from start to finish and it honestly blew my mind. I would also ask a few questions, such as- â€Å"What was it like after you found out Kunta Kinte was your ancestor? † â€Å"How did you feel when you stood at the site where Kunta Kinte arrived? † â€Å"Did you like school? † And final ly, â€Å"Do you know how much I love Roots? † I actually did enjoy researching Alex Haley because I learned a few new things. I had been wanting to learn more about the man who directed Roots. So when I was given this project I was pretty excited.

Paradise Lost The Devil Compar Essay How does John Milton portray Satan in his poem, Paradise Lost? In this epic poem, Satans traits include pride, treachery, and persistent spitefulness. I believe that these character traits compare to the leadership of Howe Military School. Satan commits many prideful acts throughout the poem. This shows when Milton writes, what time his pride / Had cast him out of Heaven, with all his host / of rebel angels, by whose aid aspiring / To set himself in glory above his peers(36-39). This line states that God threw Satan from Heaven because of his sin of pride in trying to set himself above his peers. The actions of certain Howe Cadet leaders compare to the pride of Satan when they over extend their power beyond the boundaries set forth by the school. His pride caused him to over extend his power, and commit his next error. Milton writes, He trusted to have equaled the Most High, / If he opposed; and with ambitious aim / Against the throne and monarchy of God / Raised impious war in Heaven and battle proud / With vain attempt(40-43). This line shows that Satans pride caused him to believe he was equal to God. That belief led him to betray God, attempting to create a coup in Heaven. This action compares to Howe Cadet leaders when they betray other cadets, in vain, to gain more power. Satan thrived off the power he had in Heaven and tries to gain more, just as Cadet leaders often do. When he fails to gain more power, he looks to take revenge against those who resisted him. After God throws Satan from Heaven, Satan realizes his mistake in underestimating the power of God and becomes spiteful. He refuses to accept his punishment and looks for a way to offend Heaven. This is shown when Milton wrote, As being the contrary to his high will / Whom we resist. If then his providence / Out of our evil seek to brin g forth good, / Out labor must be to pervert that end, / And out of good still to find means of evil(161-164). Satan instructs his minions to go out into the world and to work to disrupt acts of good and commit acts of evil. Howe Cadet leaders often act in this spiteful manner when they meet resistance in their attempts to expand their power. The leaders order cadets to commit acts of an extremely offensive nature to get revenge. In John Miltons Paradise Lost, the poem portrays Satan as a prideful, treacherous, and spiteful being. After reading the epic poem, I believe that Satan could have acquired his character traits and leadership skills at Howe Military School. I find that most of the Cadet leaders at Howe Military School properly portray Miltons image of Satan.
